Open Roads
EV’s make great city cars. What about B-Road blasts though? The I-Pace is true to its Jaguar heritage. When conditions and the road permits the I-Pace can really make very rapid progress. Putting the drivetrain in Dynamic Mode (something that is harder to do than it should be) brings the car to life. You have to remember that it is a heavy car but the suspension does a very good job of controlling the mass, the main challenge is going from straight to corner. You’re almost certainly going to arrive at the corner quicker than you expect due to the point-and-squirt nature of all that torque, then you need to ensure you’ve brought the speed down and settled into the corner. The Traction Control very rarely plays a part and when it does, it doesn’t do more than a quick wrist slap. Unlike ICE vehicles that often have to cut all power to the engine to regain traction, the EV drivetrain and 4-wheel-drive means precision control of the driven forces. In short, it’s a hoot. It is worth noting that the biggest issue, is probably the speed at which you can come up behind and then overtake other motorists. You can go for gaps that the person in front might not think possible and might not be ready for you. I have been an Advanced Motorist for more than 20 years and this car is very good at putting those skills to good use.
