Lane Keep Assist

One of the driver assists that is available on the I-Pace, is Lane Keep Assist (LKA). When I got the car, I was dubious about how useful this would be. Having driven A Tesla with the final version of the first iteration of AutoPilot (AP1), I had found it very useful. The prospect of using an inferior product didn’t fill me with confidence. I am happy to report that I now drive almost all my motorway miles with LKA turned on. It is quite good at taking just a little of the strain off the driving. It’s particularly good at masking the effects of strong cross-winds. It has a couple of issues. Firstly, it’s not great in wet or drying roads as it recognises shiny wet parts of the road as white lines. Secondly, even when not being used as LKA, it’s always on to some degree and on narrow country lanes, it seems to always want to drag you away from the white lines. This is at its worst when there is a white line on the gutter side of the road, it’s narrow and you’re moving over towards the edge to avoid an oncoming vehicle. At this point, it will try to pull you away from the edge white line TOWARDS the oncoming vehicle. Not fun.
