Braking

I have talked previously about the changes made to the transition from regen to friction braking in the latest software update. I’m still not a fan of having to use the brake pedal to access the higher regen at high speeds. That’s one thing I would be very happy if they put it back to how it was and a more one-pedal driving style.

The brakes themselves perform adequately. They're not as reassuring as I would like for the performance of the vehicle but their overall performance has been good enough. The I-Pace is a heavy car and the performance of the motor and the suspension can often disguise this mass. However, heavy braking cannot disguise this with weight transfer and the brake performance might 'feel' like the week link in the performance dimensions. I have never had them fade badly but under fast road conditions I have noticed them first of all warm up to better performance and then fade a little.

TIP: As should be common practice but isn’t, as the use of friction brakes is minimal, it is very prudent to do a hard stop from 30mph to almost zero when first driving to de-glaze the discs and pads. This was very evident after prolonged periods of idle during lockdown.
